The University of Jaffna is a public university that was established in 1974 as the sixth campus of the University of Sri Lanka. UoJ became an independent, autonomous university in 1979. It is located in Thirunelvely, around 4km north of Jaffna town and has nine faculties, but not all the faculties are located in this premises. This premises originally belonged to the Parameswara College, which was founded in 1921 by Pon. Ramanathan.

The Jaffna campus was established on 25 July 1974 and started functioning on 1 August 1974 at the Parameswara College premises in Thirunelvely. It now has over 5500 students and 1,000+ employees. It is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The motto of this premier higher education institution in Jaffna is "Discernment is wisdom (மெய்ப்பொருள் காண்பதறிவு)."
